Hair Oiling: An Ancient Ritual Backed by Modern Science
From Ayurvedic tradition to TikTok obsession — how to oil your hair properly, and which oils actually work.

Hair oiling has been part of South Asian beauty tradition for thousands of years. Recent research now confirms what generations already knew: regular oiling reduces protein loss from the hair shaft, improves shine and protects strands from breakage.
Coconut oil is the most studied — it is small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle and bond with internal protein. It is best for medium to thick hair and as a pre-wash treatment rather than a leave-in.
Argan oil is lighter and ideal for fine hair as a post-wash sealing oil. A few drops smoothed through damp ends prevent frizz and add gloss without weight.
For scalp massage, rosemary-infused jojoba oil is the modern favorite. Apply with the fingertips in slow circles for five minutes, leave on for at least thirty, then shampoo thoroughly.
Once a week is plenty for most hair types. Daily oiling can lead to buildup, irritation and the opposite of the shine you are chasing.
